SANDY. Set near Little Cottonwood Canyon in Sandy, La Caille is the perfect place to take a date or business contact if you want to impress. In the style of an 18th century French chalet, La Caille sits on twenty-plus resplendent acres, complete with formal gardens, a tranquil stream, a greenhouse, and colorful peacocks who patrol the grounds. The French menu features fabulous entrees such as escargot and the signature rack of lamb. Reservations suggested.

With its warm, burnished interiors and soothing decor, Log Haven is a perfect place to dine ­ even moreso if you're celebrating a special occasion. Nestled among pine trees, waterfalls, and beautiful landscaping, the well-regarded restaurant serves New American cuisine like coriander-rubbed ahi tuna, mustard-crusted duck, and sage-tinged pastas. Also keep an eye out for bison and veal bolognese sauce over homemade pappardelle, porcini-dusted diver scallops, and pan-roasted rabbit with wild mushrooms and madeira. A delightful experience.

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH. This restaurant combines fish from the San Francisco wharf with wood from the American Southwest, producing mesquite-grilled seafood as a result. The glass-enclosed kitchen allows diners the opportunity to watch chefs exercise their art and create the restaurant's special dishes. Specialties include scallop, shrimp, and halibut plates. If you aren't in the mood for seafood, chicken and steaks are also served. The Broiler's lobby area doubles as a fresh market. Reservations are accepted for lunch but not dinner.

DOWNTOWN. Boasting a wonderful view of the Liberty Park pond, this casual eatery offers up diverse lunch and dinner menus that feature everything from quesadillas and Thai chicken to Greek salads and an always-reliable Quiche of the Day. However, it is Park Café's breakfast that has won native hearts and tummies. With such specialties as Southwest Eggs (served with green chili, Monterey jack cheese, salsa, and sour cream) and Mexican Hash served in a flour tortilla, it's easy to see why Park Café is as popular as it is good.

DOWNTOWN. A recent addition to the downtown dining scene, Passages offers a contemporary setting and one of Temple Square's most upscale menus. Featuring black and white tiles, orange and yellow walls, soft yet ample lighting, and even a tranquil waterfall, this attractive restaurant is a favorite of the downtown business crowd. Southwestern fare dominates the menu; however, lighter Asian options are also available. Reservations are suggested. Passages does not serve alcohol.
